The Economics Department says:

The extra-curricular activities organized by the Undergraduate Economic Council benefit students in a number of important dimensions. First, they provide current students, who are pursuing a degree in economics, with valuable information regarding the available post-graduation career paths. Second, they allow students to get to know better their economics professors as well as recent successful alumni. Finally, the various events provide an excellent opportunity for students with similar interests to socialize together, exchange ideas, and have some fun.
