Finance Modelling Excel Training - Sign up now!

The Undergraduate Economics Council, with generous support from Certified Management Accountants of Ontario, is very excited to offer a unique opportunity for a specialized Financial Modelling Excel Training - which will be delivered by The Marquee Group - Canada's leading provider of financial modelling training programs. This is an opportunity open to students in ALL MAJORS. These sessions would typically cost at least $100 per participant, but have been generously subsidized by the Undergraduate Economics Council and CMA Ontario; so that the cost of this full day of valuable training is only $25 per student. The class size is strictly limited, so please register ASAP!

Registration is now open HERE! The training will be held on February 10, 2012 from 8:30am to 5pm in the Finance Learning Center at the UTM Library.

A financial model is an Excel spreadsheet that uses accounting and finance skills to forecast or project the future income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements for a project and/or company. Indicating that you have attended this training will look very good on your résumé, will signal to future employers your Excel skills and your commitment to excellence, and will give you a distinct advantage in your upcoming career search!

Excel Workshops are back!

Do you feel that you are lacking technical skills? Would you like to learn something that is transparent between school and work? UEC and UCS are presenting Excel Workshops, for another semester!

Excel has become a widely accepted tool in the business world and has continued to enforce its position as a fundamental need-to-know skill. Knowing how to use it will enhance YOUR resume and provide a great advantage in your employment objectives.

Enhance your resume by completing the series of Excel Workshops! It will help YOU stand out among many other candidates and putting you closer to your dream job.

This fact has provided a substantial demand for these workshops which will be held in the Financial Learning Centre. Led by Michael Meth, the workshop will be offered again this winter session and will consist of 4 lectures. These lectures will be held consecutively once a week. Upon completion, a certificate will be granted which signifies that you have attended and completed all assignments.

Economics Case Competition

January 17, 6-8 PM; Introduction and Info Session (Council of Chambers)
January 23, 12-2 PM; Research Workshop (Library FLC)
February 7, 5-7PM; Reports Deadline and Presentation (Council of Chambers)

You cannot miss out on this one of a kind Economics Case Competition! This is a time to show off your skills! During the information session participants will be receiving the case study, the rules and regulations, and the floor will be opened for Q&A. One of the three judges will be present at this information session and he will be giving a small presentation on the case.

You will be competing individually or in teams of maximum 3 students, out of which at least one student must be in second and first year. The competitors will be given a case study that ponders upon a major current (economic) issue and with your knowledge you are to choose a solution to the problem at hand. You will be required to turn in a report with your findings, along with any supporting data. With the help of three to four professionals, who will serve as our judges, these reports will be examined and the top three reports will be chosen.

Top three groups are to present in front of the judges at a separate ceremony and one group winner will be chosen. You will be able to showcase your findings during the presentation to three prestigious judges, including TD Securities' Chief Macro Strategist.

The three part event will allow you to bring the skills that you have learned in the workshops and in the classroom into a real-world setting. UEC strives to provide you with skills that will be beneficial to you personally and professionally.

The winning team will obtain a cash prize and the honor of dinning out with TD's Chief Macro Strategist! This is a once in a lifetime networking opportunity.

UEC's Resume Workshop - Capital Markets

Make sure you sign up for our Resume workshop HERE!

This workshop, which will be facilitated by Michael Meth, Director of the Li Koon Chun Finance Learning Center, and Monica Scott, a representative of the Career Centre, is a sure way to put you ahead of the game. At the end of the workshop you will be receiving a set of technical questions that UEC has compiled from different companies and banks, that will help you prepare for any interview. You will also be given a list of internships available. This resume workshop is specifically focused for students interested in finance and economics. It is recommended that you attend this session if you are interested in attending UEC's Mock Interviews.

Although not required, it is recommended to bring 2 copies of your resume and cover letter. If preferred, you can choose to make them anonymous. Again, if you do not have them prepared you should still attend!

This workshop is a recommended prerequisite for the Mock Interviews!

Department of Economics and UEC is HIRING for ECONLIFE!

EconLife: A web magazine for Economics Students to talk about relevant issues in our everyday economy and to provide another medium for out of classroom learning.

Position: Economics Journalist and Article Contributor

Looking for motivated and articulated second, third or fourth year economics student (economics specialist preferably) to conduct interviews of well-known economists and economics alumni for our student-run web magazine. As a contributor to our website you will be in charge of putting together an economics thread that aims at guiding students in first and second year through their economics courses.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Support activities for economic research
  • Assist with the generation of research publications
  • Recreate and update economic model from notes
  • Design a complete set of questions for each interview
  • Assist in the preparation of interviews and reports
  • Create economic articles that demonstrate concepts in a concise and coherent manner

This is a great opportunity to build relationships with professors and to obtain experience in the field of economics. This position displays great initiative, combination of language and business skills. Applications must contain a writing sample on a subject of the student’s choosing within Economics. The application process will consist of an interview with the UEC editorial board with support from the Department of Economics.

Other Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

  • Exceptional economic/analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Possess a sound knowledge of economics and current affairs
  • Must also demonstrate a good understanding of analytical concepts used in first and second year economics.
  • Superior analytical writing, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision
  • Strong economic background
  • A self starter, highly motivated
  • Must be able to work independently and sometimes under strict time constraints while being while working within dynamic teams and interacting with clients
  • Understands and is interested in real life economic issues
  • Relevant advanced level economic courses are considered an asset

Student must have a strong background in writing. Student must present a small article on the current economic position in Greece. A small paragraph would be acceptable (maximum 350 words).
