Undergraduate Economics Council in 2011-2012

Economics Mix and Mingle was held on September 15, 2011. The event was a huge success, as many students came out and participated. They had an opportunity to meet their professors, TAs, Principal Deep Saini, and the UEC Council. Thanks to everyone who attended and gave the year a great start!

Undergraduate Economics Council in 2010-2011

UEC has hosted numerous informative and interactive events that are not only relevant to students’ future careers but are also very enjoyable. One of our most successful events was the FOREX Challenge. Michael Gibbens, the Managing Director and Head of North American FX Sales and Spot Trading at TD Securities as well as Albert Phung from the Investopedia Platform were guest speakers at this event. The top three students were awarded with a job shadow at TD Securities and the winner was given a cash prize of $300 as well. We have also worked with Scotiabank’s Chief Economist Warren Jestin and BMO’s Deputy Chief Economist Douglas Porter who shared their personal experiences and provided students with information about future careers related to the banking industry. Moreover, we are dedicated to improving the environment. This year we held an event in which the CEO of Trillium Power, John Kourtoff, delivered a speech about renewable energy and the impact it has on our economy. Although our main focus has always been creating career-related opportunities for our students, we also realize it is important to reach out to the community and help those in need. That is why we partnered up with Habitat for Humanity and represented UTM at the Toronto’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Coalition build. UEC was involved in fundraising efforts and took part in helping build houses to help eliminate poverty housing. Because of dedicated individuals on the council, UEC's growth was tremendous this year and we hope this growth continues into the 2011-2012 school year as well.

For the year of 2010-2011, UEC was also awarded the Best Academic Society of the Year Award for excellence at a recognition event hosted by the UTMSU (University of Toronto Mississauga's Student Union).
